At 2,300 Meals, Herndon Cares Seeks Additional Support.
1,000 neighbors in need received meals on #TakeoutTuesday!

On Tuesday, April 28th, Herndon Cares provided over 1,000 community members with delicious takeout dinners from local restaurants. This brings the four-week-old program’s #TakeoutTuesday total to approximately 2,300 dinners. Herndon Cares thanks its 10 partnering faith communities, 100+ donors, many volunteers, and 17 participating restaurants for their support and community spirit. As more and more neighbors are asking for help, Herndon Cares welcomes additional support at HerndonCares.org.
“Herndon Cares would like to provide dinners to all Herndon/Reston neighbors who are significantly struggling with putting food on their tables, and we also would love to use as many of our local restaurants as possible,” shared K Scarry of the First Baptist Church of Herndon. “We have hungry neighbors, excited restaurants, and engaged community members. Now we need financial support.”
Spearheaded by the First Baptist Church of Herndon, Herndon Cares provides Herndon/Reston area families experiencing food insecurity with takeout dinners from local restaurants. With its innovative mission of helping the hungry and local businesses at the same time, Herndon Cares has already grown to involve nine local congregations in addition to First Baptist. These include Christ Fellowship Church, Floris United Methodist Church, Herndon United Methodist Church, Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation, St. John Neumann Catholic Community, Trinity Presbyterian Church, and Washington Plaza Baptist Church. Additionally, businesses continue to join the program, and they now include local favorites such as Amphora’s Diner Deluxe, Anita’s, Apple Spice, A Taste of the World Restaurant, Charcoal Kabab, Country Oven, Enatye Ethiopian Restaurant, Great Harvest Bread Company, Guapos, Houlihan’s, Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern, Mellow Mushroom, Mr. Pepperoni, Paisano’s, Virginia Kitchen, Willard’s BBQ, and 100 Bowls.
Herndon Mayor Lisa Merkel shares Scarry’s enthusiasm. “Herndon Cares is the epitome of what I love about our Town. Our congregations and neighbors coming together to contribute to a fund to not only bring meals to our families in need, but to do so by supporting our local restaurants in the process...is exactly what Herndon is all about. In Herndon, we take care of each other. Please join me in supporting this effort.”
