29 New Traffic Lights Proposed for Reston, Herndon

A 2050 funding plan discussed Monday includes details on what kind of road improvements an advisory group wants to make in Reston.

RESTON, VA — An advisory group created with the purpose of shaping future road projects in Reston held a major meeting Monday night at South Lakes High School, and they discussed a 2050 funding plan that would include, among other things, 29 new traffic lights in the Reston and Herndon area.

The Reston Network Analysis Advisory Group, which was created to help Fairfax County staff "shape the future multi-modal grid of streets/paths (i.e. 'complete streets') within the Reston Transit Station Areas (TSAs)," met Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. to discuss the Funding Plan. Included in that funding plan is a proposal to add 29 more traffic lights to deal with congestion in the area, in addition to the 77 existing lights in the area under consideration, which includes Reston Station, Reston Town Center, and parts of Herndon along the Dulles Toll Road corridor.

The proposal falls under "mitigation measures" in the proposal. Other mitigations include modifications to lane configurations, signal timing optimization and evaluation of all-way and two-way stops.
