RESTON, VA — Fairfax County investigators determined that an electrical event involving a power strip started a fire that caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to a Reston area home recently, according to a release.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel responded around 12:16 p.m., on April 29, to the 2300 block of Whitetail Court for the report of a fire.

Arriving on the scene, crews saw smoke coming from the front of a two-story, single-family home. They were able to extinguish the fire quickly, according to a post on the department's official blog. No injuries were reported and two cats were rescued from the home.

The fire, which investigators determined was accidental, started in the second-floor master bedroom. One occupant was inside the home at the time and smoke alarms alerted them to the fire. Once they discovered the fire on the second floor, the occupant called 911 and exited the home.
