RESTON, VA — Reston Association's Board of Directors unanimously approved a contract Friday evening appointing Peter Lusk as the organization's new chief executive officer, making permanent the leadership role he has held since former CEO Mac Cummins resigned in January. The announcement came during a special virtual board meeting that began at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The board also unanimously approved waiving the association's residency requirement for the CEO position for three years, allowing Lusk to serve under the organization's bylaws.

Board Director John Farrell moved to approve Lusk's CEO contract, which had previously been presented to the board by the association's general counsel. After a brief procedural discussion regarding the meeting agenda, the board's attorney advised that approval of the contract was appropriate without adding a separate agenda item because the planned executive session was no longer necessary. The motion then passed unanimously.

The board immediately followed with another unanimous vote suspending the CEO residency requirement contained in the Reston Association bylaws for a three-year term.

Following the votes, Board President Travis Johnson explained what had occurred.

"What we've just heard is a call for congratulations, because what that series of motions allowed this board to appoint Peter Lusk as chief executive officer of the Reston Association," Johnson said.

Johnson said Lusk had served the association for the past three years and most recently as acting CEO, demonstrating the leadership and judgment needed to lead the organization.

The association echoed that assessment in a news release issued after the vote.

"Over the past six months, Peter has demonstrated the steady leadership, sound judgment, and unwavering commitment that Reston Association needs to thrive," Johnson said in the release. "The Board has seen firsthand his ability to guide the organization, support our staff, and make decisions that serve the best interests of our members. We are confident that Peter is the right person to lead the Association into its next chapter, and we look forward to continuing our work together on behalf of the Reston community."

Lusk thanked the board following the vote.

"Thank you all so much. It's an honor," he said during the meeting.

In the association's announcement, Lusk said he is looking forward to leading the organization.

"It is an honor to be asked to steward a community with the history and relevance of Reston," Lusk said. "I look forward to working towards a bright future with our staff, Board of Directors, and membership."

Lusk Joined RA In 2023

Lusk joined Reston Association in 2023 as chief operating officer after serving as a division chief with the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation. In 2024, he was recognized as one of Leadership Fairfax's Top 40 Under 40.

He is a Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute, a Certified Public Manager through the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and a Facility Management Professional through the International Facility Management Association. He holds a master's degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a bachelor's degree from Fredonia State University.

Leadership Transition

Lusk has served as acting CEO since Mac Cummins resigned in January after leading the association for nearly five years. Patch previously reported that Cummins left the position to pursue another professional opportunity.

One of the nation's largest community associations, Reston Association serves more than 63,000 residents. The organization maintains approximately 1,350 acres of open space, manages recreational facilities and enforces property and architectural covenants throughout the planned community.
