RESTON, VA — Labor Day weekend is traditionally considered the unofficial end of summer, and many people try to squeeze in one last visit to the beach or dip in the neighborhood pool.
Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 7, in 2026. Many services will be closed or adjusted for the holiday, while Fairfax County Public Schools students will get a four-day weekend.
Here are the closures and schedule changes to know about around Reston:
Fairfax County government offices: Closed Monday, Sept. 7.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Schools are closed Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day break. Both days are holidays for all FCPS employees and students.
Reston Community Center: The Terry L. Smith Aquatics Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day.
Courts: Fairfax County General District Court, Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court and Circuit Court will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, for Labor Day.
Department of Motor Vehicles: Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed Monday, Sept. 7. Many DMV services are available online.
Fairfax Connector: Buses will operate on a Sunday service schedule Monday.
Routes operating on Labor Day are 101, 109, 151, 152, 161, 162, 171, 310, 321, 322, 371, 401, 402, 423, 463, 467, 558, 559, 574, 605, 630, 651, 662, 672, 721, 803, 901, 921, 924, 937, 950, 952, 954, 983 and RIBS 1 through RIBS 5. Routes not on the list will not operate.
That list differs from Labor Day 2025 after Fairfax Connector made service changes in June. Among them, Route 552, which served Reston and Herndon, was discontinued, with riders directed to Routes 558, 559, 574, 924 and 950, RIBS 1 and 3 and the Silver Line as alternatives. Sunday service was also discontinued on Routes 615 and 642.
Fairfax Connector Transit Stores, including those at the Reston Town Center Transit Station and Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station, will be closed Monday. The Connector Customer Service Call Center will also be closed.
Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library branches will be closed Monday, Sept. 7.
Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus will operate on their regular Sunday schedules Monday. Metrorail will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight.
Regular fares will be in effect, while parking at Metro-owned garages and lots will be free for Metro riders.
MetroAccess subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday. Customers who need MetroAccess service Monday should make a separate reservation.
Fairfax County Park Authority: Recreation centers will be open from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday. Drop-in childcare will be closed.
Lake Fairfax Park's visitor center will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and its marina will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Park Authority nature centers and historic sites will be closed. Riverbend Park's visitor center will be open from noon to 5 p.m.
There will be no Park Authority land, fitness or aquatic classes at recreation centers throughout Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5-7. Resource management and lakefront park programs will be held as scheduled.
Trash and recycling: Fairfax County collection customers will have regular trash and recycling collection Monday. Residents with private service should contact their hauler about possible holiday schedule changes.
The I-66 Transfer Station and I-95 Landfill Complex will be open Monday.
Post offices: U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, and regular mail will not be delivered. Regular retail and mail delivery services will resume Tuesday, Sept. 8.
