Reston Hospital Grant To Expand Maternal, Heart Health Resources

RESTON, VA — A $25,000 grant announced Monday by Reston Hospital Center will help expand maternal health resources and blood pressure monitoring programs across Northern Virginia.

The HCA Healthcare Foundation grant is being awarded to the American Heart Association Greater Washington Region to support programs aimed at improving maternal and cardiovascular health.

The funding will help provide kits for new parents containing information and evidence-based resources related to healthy pregnancies, safer deliveries and postpartum health, according to Reston Hospital Center, which is part of HCA Virginia.

The grant also will support American Heart Association blood pressure control initiatives, including the placement of a self-service, automated blood pressure monitoring station with a community partner.

"Heart disease is a leading health issue in communities across the country, and expanding access to prevention, education and advanced care is critical," Dr. Sunil Madan, chief medical officer of Reston Hospital Center, said in a statement.

Madan said the grant is intended to give residents more opportunities to learn about cardiovascular risks and take preventive steps.

"Supporting healthier families starts with ensuring people have access to the resources and information they need at every stage of life," Madan said. "Through this grant and our partnership with the American Heart Association, we are investing in community-based solutions that can help more people understand their heart health and take steps to reduce their risk."

Maternal And Cardiovascular Health

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of maternal death in the United States, according to information provided with the grant announcement.

Pregnancy also can reveal or increase cardiovascular risks that may continue after delivery, making education, prevention and follow-up care important before, during and after pregnancy.

Reston Hospital Center also recently launched an open-heart surgery program, expanding the cardiovascular services available at the Reston facility.
