South Lakes High quarterback Christian Wyatt threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and the Seahawks' defense allowed just 126 total yards and zero pass completions as the Seahawks rolled over Chantilly, 41-6, Friday night in a storm-interrupted game at Chantilly.
Wyatt, who was 10-of-11 passing, hit Joshua Dagbe for touchdowns of 16, 18 and 32 yards and scrambled 25 yards for another score as the Seahawks improved to 6-1 overall and evened their Concorde District record at 1-1. Chantilly, now 3-4, 0-2 in the Concorde, went 0-for-7 with two interceptions and has scored just six points in two league games.
The game began in a driving rainstorm, which Chantilly took advantage of to mount its best drive of the night. The Chargers moved 80 yards in 14 plays, all on the ground, to a 1-yard scoring run by Elijah Hahm but missed the point-after and led 6-0.
"They showed a look we hadn't seen, and it took some time to adjust," said Dagbe, who also stars in the Seahawks defensive backfield.
The Seahawks adjusted quickly. That opening drive ended up accounting for two-thirds of the offense Chantilly managed all night. South Lakes recorded 13 tackles for loss, and the Chargers ran just six plays from South Lakes territory after that opening drive.
The Seahawk offense responded to the early threat with six touchdowns on its next seven possessions.
The kickoff after Chantilly's touchdown went out of bounds, giving South Lakes the ball at the 35. A completion from Wyatt to Nick Picarelli and a 15-yard penalty on Chantilly put the ball in Charger territory. Then a 12-yard completion to Picarelli gave South Lakes first down on the Charger 25.
One play later, Smith scored from 25 yards out. It was a typical Smith run in that he broke tackles early on, then created space for himself and barreled seemingly untouched.
After a 3-and-out and South Lakes' only punt of the night, the Seahawks took advantage of short fields for easy scores.
South Lakes' Lucien Cheng blocked a punt on the Chargers' next possession, giving South Lakes the ball at the Chantilly 10. Three plays later, Smith banged in from the one to make it 14-6 South Lakes with 3:26 left in the first half.
Just as the extra point went through, lightning struck nearby. The stadium was evacuated and the teams did not return for more than an hour. Many of the fans waited out the storm in the gym, where the South Lakes contingent continued to cheer.
When the game did resume, the South Lakes defense went right back to work, forcing a 4th-and-3 at the Chantilly 27. The Chargers went for it, Cameron Soto threw Hahm for a 5-yard loss, and the Seahawks were back in business at the Chantilly 22.
After a three-yard loss, Wyatt faked a handoff and scrambled to his left 25 yards for a touchdown to make it 21-6.
After a halftime just long enough for the Chantilly dance team to perform, the Seahawks offense went right back to work. Smith rumbled for 23 yards on a screen pass to set up South Lakes at the Chantilly 22, and Dagbe caught a short pass from Wyatt and skittered through the defense for a 16-yard touchdown that made it 28-6.
South Lakes got still another short field when sophomore David Laderyou intercepted a pass from Liam Fetheringham that gave South Lakes the ball at the Chantilly 25. Fetheringham has been Chantilly's starter for much of the season, but two other quarterbacks had seen action before the South Lakes game, and Friday's starter – Mason Strait, who wears No. 27– had not played quarterback in a varsity game before Friday night.
On fourth-and-2 at the 18, Wyatt hit Dagbe again, this time over the middle for a touchdown that made it 35-6 South Lakes with 5:30 to go in the third quarter.
The Seahawks then had one final short-field drive, taking over at the Chantilly 33 after a series in which the South Lakes defense recorded three tackles for loss and the Chargers managed a punt of just 19 yards. Of its seven possessions on the night, five ended with the Chargers having more than 10 yards to go for a first down.
Two plays later, Wyatt hit Dagbe again, this time down the sideline, for a 32-yard touchdown that made it 41-6.
"This was a really good team win," said South Lakes Coach Jason Hescock. "The conditions were tough, but it didn't really take away much of what we wanted to do. We were just running our offense and not beating ourselves with penalties and other mistakes. We've really emphasized eliminating mistakes, and we did that tonight. And we have good dudes on the outside in Nick Picarelli and Joshua Dagbe, and we let them cook."
Chantilly finally made it back across the 50 on its next possession, but the march ended four yards into South Lakes territory when Strait was intercepted by Dagbe.
With that, the Seahawks turned the game over to reserves, and backup quarterback Gavin Satterfield led a drive that ended at the Chantilly 4 as time ran out.
"We had a really good week of practice," Wyatt said. "We really focused on the small things, and you could 100 percent see the improvement. A lot of great execution tonight."
