Boating On Lake Anne In Reston? Be Careful, Police Warn
Fairfax County Police have some tips and advice for people planning to go out on a boat this summer.

RESTON, VA — 'Tis the season for heading out on the lake, but before you get on a boat on Lake Anne or Lake Thoreau or any other Reston lakes, police have some advice for you.
The Fairfax County Marine Patrol Unit has seen a lot over the years, and they've compiled a bunch of tips to keep you safe this summer, according to a statement.
1. Wear a life jacket. There has never been a case of water-related death where a life jacket was worn, at least in this area, the unit says.

4. Check for basic requirements. All boat operators must take a boater safety course, and carry the proof with them. All vessels should have life jackets that fit every person. They must also have fire extinguishers, horns or whistles, and a throwable life preserver.
5. Do not drink and drive. It applies not just to cars, but to boats as well.
