25th Annual Clean the Bay Day – Can You Volunteer at our Reston Lakes?

25th Annual Clean the Bay Day – Can You Volunteer at our Reston Lakes?
Saturday, June 1 is the silver anniversary of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s Clean the Bay Day. This is the 25th year that thousands of Virginians across the Commonwealth will gather on our rivers, streams and lakes to stop litter from moving downstream to the Bay.
How does trash get in the lakes in Reston? It washes down through the storm drains when it rains. It blows off a boat and no one notices. It may float in from above – Paul and I scooped an airless red Mylar balloon out of Lake Audubon last night.

During a walk last week I saw several crows pulling trash out of an overflowing can. I hope the owner a) cleaned up the mess and b) will consider investing in a second can so the lid can always be closed (see photo). Whatever trash didn’t get picked up washed down the hill in the next big rain and right into Lake Audubon.
Reston Association is taking the lead on lake clean up for the June 1 Clean the Bay Day. If you are available that Saturday morning from 10-noon, please sign up to help out on Lake Anne, Lake Thoreau or Lake Audubon. The person to contact to volunteer is Ha Brock, RA Volunteer & Community Outreach Coordinator, at habrock@reston.org or 703-435-7986.

I’m organizing a group wearing Rescue Reston t-shirts to add the west end of Lake Audubon to the clean up. I have a flotilla of boats that we can use or bring your own. Wear your Rescue Reston t-shirt so I can get some great photos of our group. If you want to join the clean up at the west end of the lake, which is the opposite end from the Lake Audubon pool and boat ramp, email me at connie@rescuereston.org and I’ll get back to you with details.
No matter which lake you help out at, wear your bright yellow Rescue Reston t-shirt and share photos on Patch and Rescue Reston’s Facebook Page.
