How do I pick out the right tree?

First, you need to know how tall of a tree you can get. Measure the distance between the floor and the ceiling in the space where you want to put it, and keep in mind you'll need to leave at least a foot of space or so for any topper you want to put on the tree.

You also should measure the area where you want to put it to see how wide of a tree you can get. You don't want to bring it home and find that its branches are mashed up against the wall, after all.

When you're at the lot, test the following four things, according to This Old House:

• Branches - the needles should not shed easily
• Needles - they should have a nice scent
• The tree - drop it a few inches, and avoid buying it if exterior needles fall off (interior needles falling off is fine)

Once you get the tree home, there's a few things you should do first to make sure your tree has a happy home for a month. If you can, saw a couple inches off the bottom of the trunk to enable it to absorb water easier. And you're going to water it a lot, as a freshly-cut tree can consume a gallon of water in just 24 hours. Check the water level in the base every single day.

Make sure the tree is away from heating ducts or heat sources, which is bad for the tree and could even create a fire hazard.

Spread some sort of disposable plastic or at least a blanket on the ground to catch the falling needles, or you're going to have a cleaning nightmare on your hand.
