Cornerstones Names Shannon Steene As New CEO

Former executive director of Carpenter's Shelter in Alexandria succeeds Kerrie Wilson, who retires after 25 years at Cornerstones.

RESTON, VA — Cornerstones, a human services nonprofit based in Reston, announced on Thursday the appointment of Shannon Steene as its new chief executive officer. Steene will assume the role on April 13.

Andy Lacher, chair of Cornerstones’ Board of Directors, confirmed the appointment.

“Our entire interview team was impressed by Shannon’s compassionate, hands-on leadership expanding homeless services in Alexandria," he said, adding that Steene’s extensive human services leadership and ability to lead with flexibility, clarity, and compassion will be a tremendous asset.

Steene has more than 30 years of nonprofit leadership experience. He most recently served as executive director of Carpenter's Shelter, a large homeless shelter in Alexandria. During his 10-year tenure, he expanded the organization's budget and broadened services. Steene also led the transformation of a vacant Macy's into a temporary shelter while spearheading a $2 million capital campaign for a permanent facility.

Under Steene’s leadership, Carpenter’s Shelter received the 2015 Best Nonprofit Award from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. The organization also earned a 2020 David Bradt Leadership Award from the Greater Washington Community Foundation and a 2020 Best Real Estate Redevelopment Award from the Washington Business Journal. The Shelter’s board received a 2021 Board Leadership Award from the Center for Nonprofit Advancement during his time in office.

Steene also served as member engagement director for Lutheran Services in American in Washington, D.C.. His career also includes time as executive director for Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services in Alexandria.

"I'm deeply honored to step into this role and lead an organization with such a strong foundation and trusted reputation," Steene said, adding that he is grateful for the opportunity to build on Cornerstones' legacy. He succeeds Kerrie Wilson, who is retiring after 25 years of leadership.

Cornerstones’ 55-years of service and Wilson’s 25 years of leadership will be honored at the Cornerstones of Our Community celebration on April 9.
