Created in Reston, World's Largest Golf Outing Raises Millions for Veterans

The annual event, created in 2011 at Billy Casper Golf in Reston, now spans coast to coast and involves 12,000 golfers and 140 courses.

The World’s Largest Golf Outing — an event that spans 140 golf courses nationwide and this year will include 12,000 golfers — took place today (Aug. 3) to benefit America’s service members and the Wounded Warrior Project.

The event began in 2011 in Reston, Virginia at Billy Casper Golf. According to the WLGO website, Billy Casper Golf CEO Peter Hill came up with the idea when he initially suggested each of his courses hold an event on the same day to benefit members of the community.

Less than five years later, the event has spread from coast to coast and to date has raised more than $2 million for the Wounded Warrior Project. WLGO also holds the Guinness World Record for Largest Golf Outing Ever, cementing its namesake and the impact it makes on an annual basis.

Four-person teams competed at their local participating courses Monday in nine- or 18-hole competitions, and $10 of each individual player’s registration fee was donated straight to the Wounded Warrior Project, meaning this year the national event will raise at least $120,000, if not more.

Although the golfers have already taken the course for this year’s event, community members can still donate to a team or a course by clicking here.
