Discarded Smoking Materials Blamed For $20K Apartment Fire In Reston
Fairfax County fire inspectors say improperly discarded smoking materials caused an early morning fire at a Reston apartment building.

RESTON, VA — Fairfax County fire inspectors determined that improperly discarded smoking materials started an accidental fire that caused $20,000 in damage to a Reston apartment building early Friday morning, according to a fire department release. No one was injured or displaced by the fire.
Fairfax County Fire and Rescue units responded around 1:22 a.m., for the report of an apartment fire in the 11600 block of Stoneview Square, according to the release.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a haze on the third floor landing of a three-story apartment building, according to FCFRD. They quickly extinguished a fire they found on an apartment balcony. The fire was confined to the balcony and no injuries were reported.

Three people were inside the apartment when the fire was first detected. One of the occupants heard a loud popping sound coming from the kitchen area. When they went to investigate, they saw the fire on the balcony, according to the release. After two occupants failed in their attempt the extinguish the blaze, the third called 911 to request assistance.
