Dulles Airport Sets Monthly Rainfall Record

Nearly 10 inches of rain have fallen at Dulles since July began, a new record.

Dulles Airport has official set a July record for rainfall, recording 9.75 inches as of 5 p.m. on Sunday -- with two days left in the month and more rain on the way.

That easily beats the old record of 8.8 inches set just last year. However, it doesn't come anywhere close to the all-time one-month record at the airport, which was a staggering 18.19 inches of rain back in June 1972.

Reagan National Airport in Arlington also had a damp month with 9.19 inches, but that's not a record: 11.06 inches fell at the airport when World War II was wrapping up in July 1945. The biggest total at Reagan for any month was 14.02 inches in June 2006.

More rain is set to soak our region this week in what the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang is calling an "unusual and stalled weather pattern."

“Repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain may result in at least isolated instances of flooding through much of the week,” the National Weather Service forecast office said Monday.

We could get an average of two to three inches, but the amounts may vary greatly based on whether heaviest downpours happen, CWG says.
