Detectives within the Major Crimes Division’s Child Exploitation Unit were contacted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and were provided a CyberTip, received through a blogging and social media networking site. The tip alleged that child pornography had been uploaded through its servers and it was determined that the location of the upload came from a residence within Fairfax County.

Detectives immediately began their investigation on Monday, April 6, and on Wednesday April 8, determined the residence was owned by the Fairfax County police officer.

The officer has 15 years of service with Fairfax County Police and was assigned to Police Headquarters, operating in an administrative capacity, prior to being relieved of duty.

The criminal investigation is ongoing. An administrative investigation will also be completed regarding this matter. Additional information will be provided following any arrests.

------------

A Fairfax County Police officer is under investigation for allegations of child porn and has been temporarily relieved of his duties during an investigation, according to Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.

While Caldwell confirmed that the officer is under investigation and has been relieved of his duties, she said no charges have been filed. She said she could not say where the officer works in the county.

No name will be released, she said, unless charges are filed. “We want to give that person the same rights as anyone else,” Caldwell said.
