Fall Foliage in Reston: Are the Leaves About to Reach Their 2016 Peak?

It's almost mid-October, but the leaves haven't changed colors just yet. Here's when they will.

The Reston area isn't awash in autumn colors quite yet, but they're coming soon, says the latest "Fall Foliage Report" from the Commonwealth of Virginia's tourism site.

The higher mountain areas are starting to see some signs of change, with yellow, orange and red patches reported above 3,000 feet in southwest Virginia. But for most everywhere else, we've still got a little bit of waiting to do before fall is fully upon us.

"As we move into October, green is still the dominant color of Virginia's landscape," the report states. "Roadsides are still resplendent with wildflowers in shades of yellow, white and occasionally purple. From central Virginia west, the forest edge is revealing shades of pink to red, with dogwood, sourwood, black gum, Virginia creeper, and sumac among the early changers. Sumac, under-appreciated for much of the year, is striking with its glowing red leaves and deep red fruit clusters."

But fear not: the change in colors in the higher mountain areas are a sure sign that those fall colors are on their way, and we could see big changes as soon as this coming week as temperatures continue to cool.
