Fierce Storm Wreaks Havoc In Reston, Herndon (Photos)
One person claimed on social media to have witnessed a small tornado, but the National Weather Service couldn't immediately confirm.
RESTON, VA — Monday's brief but violent storm caused some problems in the Reston and Herndon area, and pictures are emerging on social media of some of the damage -- with one person on social media claiming there may have been a small tornado.
The ferocious thunderstorm packed quite a wallop, with wind gusts peaking at 60 miles per hour and torrential rains dropping a lot of water over a period of just minutes. The storm knocked out power for thousands of homes in Fairfax County.
Pictures on social media show foreboding clouds, downed trees, and heavy rain. User @maxthekit claimed to have witnessed something a bit more fierce than typical thundestorm winds at his home in Reston: "Could have also just been a really big downburst but I'm thinking it was a ef-0 [tornado] due to the fact that the wind was traveling horizontally," he tweeted.
