Update: Resident, Cat Rescued From Reston Townhouse Fire

Update Tuesday, May 19, 3:55 p.m.: Fairfax County Fire and Rescue personnel rescued a resident and resuscitated a cat during a Sunday afternoon fire in Reston, according to a FCFRD release.

Arriving first on the scene, the Battalion 1 EMS Supervisor used a neighbor's ladder to help the resident escape from the second floor window, where smoke was visible. Remaining units found a fire on the first floor and rescued one cat, which they were able to resuscitate. Five other cats died in the fire.

RESTON, VA — An electrical event in the wiring of a ceiling light fixture sparked a fire at a Reston townhouse Sunday afternoon, resulting in over $93,000 in damages, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department spokesman.

FCFRD units were dispatched around 1:30 p.m., to the report of a townhouse fire in the 2200 block of Double Eagle Court in Reston.

Arriving on the scene, firefighters found smoke coming from the residence, according Bill Delaney, FCFRD public information officer. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in a short period of time.

One firefighter received very minor injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, Delaney said.

Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by an electrical event within the wiring for a ceiling light fixture. They estimated damages at $93,750. One occupant was displaced.
