How to Prepare for Spring Storms

With spring just around the corner, we’ve almost made it through the havoc winter weather can inflict on your home. While spring weather isn’t nearly as menacing, thunderstorms and excessive rain can take their toll. By preparing your home for spring storms, you can make sure you get to fully enjoy this season of new life.

Here are three tips for protecting your home against excessive rainwater:

Clean out your gutters

It may not be a pleasant task, but you’ll be glad your home has clean gutters when spring thunderstorms arrive. Clogged gutters can cause water overflow into your home and lead to costly damage, so take care of this important piece of maintenance before the first big spring rainfall arrives. Check your basement sump pump

Make sure your basement sump pump is working and your backup battery is charged. You can test your sump pump by pouring a few buckets full of water into the sump pump floor crock and making sure the float switch activates the pump. As long as it starts working, you should be good to go for whatever surprises spring weather brings.

It’s not uncommon for stairwell drains to get covered by leaves and other debris in the winter months. By ensuring your stairwell drain is clear, you can protect your basement from potentially costly water damage.
