Independence Day 2026: What’s Open, Closed Around Reston
As Reston celebrates Independence Day, some government offices, public facilities and services will be closed or have modified hours.
RESTON, VA — Many government offices, schools, transit services and community facilities in and around Reston will be closed or operating on modified schedules for the Independence Day holiday on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, July 4.
In observance of the Fourth of July, Reston Association offices will close early at 2 p.m. on Thursday and will be closed on Friday.
Fairfax County government offices, courts and public libraries will be closed Friday, July 3. Early voting locations also will be closed that day.

Fairfax Connector buses will operate on a Saturday schedule Friday, July 3. Regular trash and recycling collection will continue on its normal schedule, but the I-66 Transfer Station and the I-95 Landfill Complex will be closed.
The Reston Community Center Hunters Woods will be open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. RCC Lake Anne will be closed on Saturday.

Most Fairfax County recreation centers will remain open with modified holiday hours, generally from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Because county government offices are closed Friday, most county facilities that typically serve as cooling centers will not be available during the ongoing heat wave. However, county recreation centers will remain open during their limited holiday hours and can be used as cooling centers.
Metro Holiday Schedule
Metro said it will operate modified service for Independence Day, with additional Metrorail service for fireworks crowds and bus schedule changes.
On Saturday, July 4, Metrorail will run from 6 a.m. until 2 a.m. Sunday. Metro said it will add service during the afternoon and evening for people traveling to Fourth of July events in Washington, D.C.
Metrobus will operate on a Sunday schedule on July 4. Riders should expect detours, delays and route changes near the National Mall because of road closures for Independence Day events.
MetroAccess will operate with reservation service, but regularly scheduled subscription trips will be canceled for the holiday and must be rebooked.
Metro recommends that riders avoid Smithsonian Station after the fireworks because of heavy crowds and use nearby stations when possible, including Federal Triangle, L’Enfant Plaza, Archives, Metro Center, Federal Center SW or Capitol South.
Metro also has a separate holiday schedule for Friday, July 3, the observed Independence Day holiday. Riders should check schedules before traveling.
Virginia State Government Offices
Most Commonwealth of Virginia government offices will be closed Friday, July 3, because Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4. This follows the state's official 2026 holiday calendar.
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles
The Virginia DMV has announced:
- All full-service DMV Customer Service Centers will be closed Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.
- The Customer Contact Center also will be closed both days.
- DMV notes that more than 50 services remain available online at dmv.virginia.gov during the closure.
- DMV Select offices may have different schedules because they are operated by local governments.
Virginia ABC Stores
Virginia ABC stores will remain open on Independence Day, but with reduced hours. All Virginia ABC stores will close at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4.
