K9 Bites Suspect in Reston After Car Chase: Police

Police say the man ignored commands to comply after he crashed his car.

RESTON, VA — A man has been arrested on a litany of charges Tuesday night after police say he fled an attempted traffic stop and then was bitten by a K9 when he refused to comply with police commands.

A police officer was sitting at a red light behind a Honda Civic at the intersection of Wiehle Avenue and North Shore Drive shortly before 11 pm. Oct. 18 when he witnessed the car turn right on red in violation of a posted sign, according to a report from the Fairfax County Police Department.

"The officer attempted to initiate a traffic stop but the Honda fled and a brief pursuit ensued," the report states. "The driver of the Honda lost control and crashed near Associated Drive; he then fled on foot. Fairfax 1 and a K9 team responded to assist in the search for the fleeing suspect. K9 located the suspect a short distance away. The suspect was combative, refused to comply with the officer’s commands, and was bitten by the K9 dog."

Police arrested 20-year-old Devante Harris of Reston. He was taken to Reston Hospital Center for treatment, and was then sent to Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

He faces charges of felony speed to elude, reckless driving, disregarding a highway sign, driving on a suspended license and improper registration.
