Lake Thoreau Pool In Reston To Close Next Year For Renovations
The 38-year-old pool, located at 2040 Upper Lake Dr., is experiencing many safety and structural issues, according to officials.

RESTON, VA — Lake Thoreau Pool will close next year following approval by the Reston Association Board of Directors to start the development and implementation of a renovation plan for 38-year-old pool. The decision follows an assessment of the facility presented to the regular council in October, through which engineers discovered various safety and structural problems with the pool.
Some of the findings from the October report, according to the Reston Association, include potential safety issues such as deteriorating timber retaining walls that support the entire east side of the facility. There are also structural cracks in the pool shell and concrete deck.
In December 2018, Reston Association staff requested funds to perform a temporary structural repair on the pool shell prior to the 2019 pool season. In March 2019, the repairs were completed to keep the facility open for the 2019 season.

The board voted in October to allocate $350,000 in next year's budget to begin renovation on the pool. The process will begin next year with a planning and ideation stage. Construction could begin in 2021, and the new facility will be completed by 2022 if everything goes as planned, ARLNow reports.
