Local High School Student Launches Free Fitness Program

Fit Family Program - Free Personal Training for Low Income Families

HERNDON, Virginia - Aug. 8, 2018 - Because two thirds of the American population is currently overweight, we are rapidly approaching a nationwide epidemic of obesity. Many families do not possess the knowledge or means to eat a balanced diet or develop their own physical fitness regimen.

After completing a yearlong research project on childhood obesity, Oakton high school student, Mason Bram, developed the Fit Family Program alongside her father, a certified personal trainer. The Fit Family Program is a four week, cost-free, fundamental personal training program for low income families. The training program, held twice per week, focuses on basic fundamental plyometric and cardiovascular exercises. Ms. Bram tailored the program for children 12 and up, young adults, and their parents. Participants will learn how to safely and effectively exercise their entire bodies with minimal equipment. Participants will also receive advice on individualized improvements to their eating habits.

“I think it’s important for kids to be exposed to physical fitness activity in a welcoming environment,“ said Ms. Bram. “Just as important as exercise, I think, maintaining a nutritious and balanced diet will allow them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. While improving physical fitness for today’s youth is important for me, I think it’s also cool that parents and their children develop a passion for physical fitness and healthy eating together.”

Ms. Bram held the first session on 8 August at FitHealth Gym in the Fox Mill Shopping Center, in Herndon, VA. One of the attendees, Bethany Cobb, a mother of two, participated in the program because she wants to learn the benefits of living an active lifestyle.

“I want to lead by example. As a single mother, I have the full responsibility to demonstrate how to make healthy life choices.” said Ms. Cobb.
