Man Dies Sunday During Swimming Event in Reston

He was taking part in annual swim in Lake Audubon.

A man died Sunday in Reston after he was pulled unconscious from Lake Audubon during an annual swim event, according to a news release from the Reston Association.

The man, 66, was pulled from the water by a rescue boat and taken to the hospital, Fairfax County Deputy Fire Chief Anthony Barrero, told the Washington Post

The report says he was pronounced dead at about noon after suffering what appeared to be a cardiac arrest.

Reston Association issued a news release about the incident (which also reports a different age than the Washington Post):

A 63-year-old participant in the Jim McDonnell Lake Swim at Lake Audubon died after losing consciousness during the event on Sunday. The annual lake swims are organized and hosted by the Reston Masters Swim Team and held on Memorial Day weekend. They are not Reston Association events.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., Dr. Kennon Woods, a dentist from Raleigh, N.C., was removed from the water by on-site EMS staff using an aquatic vehicle. CPR was initiated and he was transferred to an on-site ambulance and taken to Reston Hospital where he was pronounced dead from cardiopulmonary arrest.

Reston Association works with the Reston Masters Swim Team each year prior to this event to ensure procedures are in place. Specifically, RA advises and coordinates logistics for borrowing boats and other equipment. The Reston Masters Swim Team is responsible for safety measures and forming the Emergency Action Plan, which reportedly functioned as planned on Sunday. The swimmer was removed from the water within one minute, allowing EMS to immediately transport him to Reston Hospital.
