NASCOW Cow Races Return To Herndon's Frying Pan Farm Park This Month
Seven cows will compete for bragging rights at the annual NASCOW fundraiser, where spectators can cheer on their favorites for a good cause.

HERNDON, VA — Seven cows, one finish line and plenty of treats. One of Northern Virginia's slowest — and most unusual — sporting events is returning to Frying Pan Farm Park next week.
The seventh annual NASCOW FundRACER will take place Thursday, Oct. 22, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. and the cows hitting the track at 6 p.m.
The event, hosted by the Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park, features the farm's resident cows competing in a race that relies more on snacks and encouragement than speed. Admission is a suggested donation of $20 per person, and walk-ins are welcome.

The lineup includes:
- JoJo: A spirited Jersey heifer and the defending 2025 champion.
- Charlise: A young Charolais/Jersey heifer making her racing debut.
- Fauna: A gentle Jersey cow.
- John (the) Deere: A spunky Jersey steer.
- Jubilee: A sweet Jersey cow.
- Rudolph: A Jersey steer ready for his turn on the track.
- Wisteria: An Angus/Hereford heifer.
Unlike professional race car drivers, these competitors don't rely on high-performance engines. Farm staff encourage them toward the finish line with treats, including fresh alfalfa and brewer's grain donated by local breweries.
The cows also spend weeks getting comfortable with the track before race day.
"Our staff and animals have been training diligently in hopes of delivering an exciting finish," Frying Pan Farm Park Manager Teresa Reynolds said. "This event continues to grow in popularity and has become a beloved tradition for both our staff and visitors!"
A Race That Started During The Pandemic
NASCOW began in 2020 after pandemic restrictions forced the cancellation of large farm gatherings, leaving the park facing funding shortfalls.
What started as a creative way to raise money while maintaining social distancing has grown into an annual tradition that attracts families, local businesses, and supporters from across the country.
The Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park, a nonprofit organization, owns the farm's animals and helps pay for their food, veterinary care, shelter and other needs.
The group also supports park improvements, scholarships, equipment purchases and educational programming.
"Every gift helps ensure Frying Pan remains a place of learning, connection, and discovery for generations to come," said Leslie Painter, a member of the nonprofit's board.
Frying Pan Farm Park spans 135 acres and preserves a piece of Fairfax County's agricultural history, offering visitors opportunities to see farm animals, explore walking trails and participate in educational activities.
