RESTON, VA — Reston may soon be getting more affordable housing and a new Reston Regional Library thanks to an unsolicited proposal submitted to the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority, according to a release from Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn.

The proposal, which was made under the Public-Private Education Facilities and Infrastructure Act of 2002, seeks to redevelop land at the intersection of Bowman Town Drive and Town Center Parkway in Reston. The 2.89 acre site includes the large parking lot to the south of the North County Governmental Center and the existing townhouse community on Bowman Towne Court, which is owned by FCHRA.

"This announcement is an exciting step forward for a much-needed new Reston Regional Library and the sustainable and socially responsible redevelopment of Reston Town Center North," Alcorn said, in his statement.

On Thursday, FCRHA issued a request for competing proposals. The county is looking for qualified developers who will design, develop and build, as well as own and operate, an affordable multifamily housing community at no cost to FCRHA on the Bowman Towne Court. Development plans must follow all county design criteria and include construction of a new library on the property. The deadline for submissions is May 16.

Voters approved partial funding for a new regional library in a 2012 bond referendum. The new development project will provide the necessary funding to build a new regional library, while keeping the old library open during construction.
