ParkRTC: Here are the Holidays Where You Will - And Won't - Get Free Parking

Some locals were surprised to find that parking wasn't free on MLK Day, and there are a few other holidays that aren't on the list.

RESTON, VA — As Reston Town Center has noted many times, there is no paid parking there on holidays. But not all holidays are exempted, and that led to some confusion and irritation for some patrons who assumed that Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a federal holiday, would result in free parking on Monday.

Several users commented on RTC's Facebook page complaining that paid parking was still in place on MLK Day, and criticized developer Boston Properties for not including the day honoring the civil rights leader on their free parking holidays list.

RTC has been up front about their holiday schedule, and has posted the exempt holidays on their site for all to see. The list doesn't include some key holidays, including President's Day (Feb. 20), Columbus Day (Oct. 9) and Veterans Day (Nov. 11) along with MLK Day. Veterans Day will fall on a Saturday this year so parking will be free in the garage anyway, but not on the street.

The full list of free parking holidays at Reston Town Center this year are as follows: Memorial Day (May 29), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (Sept. 5), Thanksgiving (Nov. 23), Black Friday (Nov. 24), Christmas (Dec. 25) and New Year's Day (Jan. 1). There is also the Friday of Fine Arts Festival (May 19-21), which will include free parking on all three days.

Visitors to RTC should also be aware that although weekends are free to park in the garage, the weekend doesn't start until Saturday, so don't forget to pay for parking if you stop by RTC on Friday night. Also, street parking isn't free on Saturdays.
