Friends of Accotink Creek are looking for volunteers to take plants rescued from Wakefield Run. These plants are all native and would be a good addition to all of your IMA sites! Give these native plants a new home or they will be destroyed
WHEN: Saturday July 20 8:00-11:00 AM;
WHERE: Wakefield Park at Braddock Road and 495
DETAILS: Friends of Accotink Creek has received permission to lead native plant rescues at Wakefield Run, prior to the start of construction for the Wakefield Run Stream Restoration project on July 24. This is an important opportunity to rescue plants from the impact corridor. Rescued plants are available for personal use, or can be contributed to Friends of Accotink and partners for environmental restoration at Wakefield Run and other areas. Some of the over 25 native plants species (excluding trees) that have been collected are Viburnum (Arrowwood, Blackhaw), ferns (Christmas, New York, Sensitive), Golden Alexander, Goldenrod, Hazelnut, Jack in the Pulpit, Mayapple, Spicebush, Strawberry bush, White Wood aster etc.
- Rescue participants should
-Wear appropriate clothes for working in nature, eg sturdy shoes, garden gloves, long pants and sleeves.
-Bring tools if possible, e.g. shovels and trowels.
-Bring planting pots if possible
-Use tick and poison ivy precautions.
