Police Praise South Lakes Students Who Reported Active Gunman

The resulting scare resulted in the lockdown of three schools in Reston on Friday.

RESTON, VA -- Friday's lockdown of three schools in Reston over concerns of an active shooter caused a great deal of alarm for everyone in the area over what turned out to be a false report, but Fairfax County Police are praising the students who came forward.

Police tweeted that two students reported their concerns to a school resource officer and school administrators at South Lakes High School, "which is exactly what they should have done."

Police responded immediately and methodically cleared all classrooms at South Lakes as well as Terraset Elementary School and Hughes Middle School, which were also locked down as a precaution.

Police believe that you can't be too careful and do not want to discourage students from reporting a potentially dangerous situation, no matter how small their suspicions might be. Schools are especially on edge after the deadly shooting at the high school in Parkland, Fla., last month.

Schools across the country will be staging a massive walkout on March 14 on the one-month anniversary of the shooting.
