Public Art Sculpture to Be Dedicated Monday in Reston

'Reston Rondo' was created by artist Mary Ann Mears.

There will be a dedication of “Reston Rondo,” an abstract sculpture by artist Mary Ann Mears Monday at 3 p.m. at the Hyatt Park in Reston Town Center (rain, snow or shine), across the street from the Hyatt Regency.

The tall bright yellow sculpture suggests warmth and welcome, said the artist (watch an interview with her, in the video below). Its shapes were influenced by the natural surroundings, Mears said.

The primary focus of Mary Ann Mears’s work from the beginning of her career has been creating sculpture for specific sites. She enjoys the challenge of responding to the physical and spatial qualities of new sites, whether architectural -- interior or exterior -- or natural.

Reston Rondo aspires to be welcoming to people approaching Reston Town Center. The sculpture is gestural, its graceful movement inviting the viewer to move around and though it. With clean organic forms suggesting lively energy, Reston Rondo is intended to be elegant with a feeling of lyricism and whimsy.

If you plan to attend, RSVP to rsvp@publicartreston.org. The public art project is supported by Reston Community Center, Reston Town Center Association, Hyatt Regency Reston and Initiative for Public Art.
