Religion & Science Fiction: A Consideration of Encounters Across Time

A Provocative Discussion on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 12:45pm in Oakton

Join the discussion! The presentation, Religion & Science Fiction: A Consideration of Encounters Across Time, will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax (UUCF) at 2709 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, VA at 12:45 PM in the Sanctuary.

From the late 1930s through the 21st Century, science fiction has presented multifaced encounters between empiricism and religious doctrine, ranging from the barely-concealed contempt of "Golden Age" SF through the newer approaches that see religion as one aspect of the "alien encounter."

The presentation will consider a selection of SF from Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall" through the "cyberpunk" fiction of William Gibson and Pat Cadigan to examine how SF depicts the interactions between science and religion: is religion the "enemy," an alternate discourse and a difficult ally, or a source of metaphors for humanity's next stage?
