'Rescue Reston' Charity Golf Tournament Takes Place on Monday
The organization successfully saved the golf course from closure, and now they need to raise money to pay the legal bills.

RESTON, VA — This Monday's charity golf tournament for Rescue Reston will be a victory lap of sorts for the organization, but also an important benefit to pay the legal bills for a successful defense of the golf course -- and there's still time to register.
It's the 2nd annual fundraising golf tournament at Reston National Golf Course on Oct. 3, a property that is officially free from any threat of being shut down for redevelopment -- at least for now.
Last year, 49 protesters from Rescue Reston spelled out a giant "NO" in front of the Reston office of Northwestern Mutual, which was seeking to get the 166-acre area approved for a residential redevelopment of townhomes. The organization rallied to the golf course's defense, and a legal battle erupted between attorneys for Northwestern Mutual and Fairfax County.

In March, Northwestern Mutual finally backed down, declining to appeal a December 2015 Fairfax County Circuit Court ruling that blocked the proposal.
The organization racked up a legal bill of $151,169, and have since paid about three quarters of it, and expect that this golf tournament will help take care of the rest.

"We have a strong committee and are working very hard for this year's golf tournament to resolve this last portion of our legal obligation," John Pinkman, chairman of the golf tournament, said in a statement. "We
are off to a great start this year with significant contributions. Yet we have a way to go. There are plenty of opportunities for members of the community and businesses to participate in or sponsor the tournament."
The golf tournament is scheduled for Oct. 3. You can find out more information here.
