'Rescue Reston' Holding Charity Golf Tournament ... to Pay for Saving the Golf Course
Rescue Reston successfully blocked Northwestern Mutual from redeveloping the golf course into townhouses -- now, they need to pay the bills.

RESTON, VA — Mark your calendars: Rescue Reston will be holding its 2nd annual fundraising golf tournament at Reston National Golf Course this October. Rescue Reston is a local charity created four years ago that fought hard to prevent Northwestern Mutual from developing on that very golf course.
Last year, 49 protesters from Rescue Reston gathered in front of the Reston office of Northwestern Mutual to spell out the word "No" as a legal battle raged between Fairfax County and attorneys from Northwestern Mutual hoping to get the 166-acre area approved for residential development.
In March of this year, Rescue Reston got their wish: attorneys representing the owners wishing to redevelop the location indicated they wouldn't appeal the December 2015 Fairfax County Circuit Court ruling that blocked the proposal.

Now, however, the organization needs to settle the large legal bill that came with its vigorous defense of the property. So far, Rescue Reston has resolved 74 percent of the $151,169 legal bill, and hopes this tournament will help settle the rest.
"We have a strong committee and are working very hard for this year's golf tournament to resolve this last portion of our legal obligation," John Pinkman, chairman of the golf tournament, said in a statement. "We are off to a great start this year with significant contributions. Yet we have a way to go. There are plenty of opportunities for members of the community and businesses to participate in or sponsor the tournament."
