(Posted Nov. 12, 2021) Funding for the Barton Hill Recreation Area renovation plan was moved up from 2023 to 2022. The Reston Association Board of Directors decided to move forward with getting the $851,000 project done, potentially by next fall, after RA members in support of the renovation voiced their opinions during a Nov. 10 public hearing on the 2022-2023 budget. Previously, the board had considered moving the funding to the second year of the biennial budget.
With the Barton Hill funding now in place in the upcoming budget, which still needs final approval on Nov. 18, the next steps in the plan are for RA to hire consultants for the project and to obtain feedback from residents living in the area surrounding the tennis courts. RA will hold a community meeting about the project this winter.

As it stands, the plan calls for the renovation of four courts, striping them for tennis and pickleball, and adding state-of-the-art LED lighting. Based on similar work recently done at the Hook Road facility, the estimated completion date for Barton Hill would be late 2022. Any significant changes to the proposal could impact the completion date.
Along with approving the funding measure, the board also passed a motion to direct the acting CEO to have the recreation and communications staffs work with the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee to "host a focused community meeting to inform and educate immediate neighbors on the effects and impacts on the facilities renovations of Barton Hill, specific to lighting, traffic patterns, etc."
