Reston Association Increases Annual Fee by $35

The Board of Directors says the new higher fee is needed to continue maintenance of area pools, tennis courts and parks.

WASHINGTON, DC — The Reston Association Board of Directors has set the 2017 annual assessment at $692 during its regular monthly meeting, which took place Thursday night. That's a $35 increase over the current fee.

The board considered assessment options ranging from $630 to as high as $725, ultimately settling with $692.

"Assessment rates are adjusted annually to reflect projected revenue and spending measures approved by the board for the first and second year of each biennial budget," the association said in a statement. "The board eliminated $174,000 for roadway maintenance and $20,000 for board governance training at a special meeting on Oct. 19. The board also elected to use $550,000 in surplus operating cash for board approved 2017 Capital Projects, to help reduce the assessment fee."

The board also opted to cut $120,000 from aquatics by reducing the hours of operation at some of the least-used pools owned by the Reston Association.

The assessment will go toward maintaining 15 pools and tennis courts, along with 1,350 acres of open space, four lakes and 55 miles of pathways, the statement notes.
