TekSynap Plans 69 Layoffs Weeks After Announcing Reston Expansion

TekSynap plans phased layoffs of 69 workers after contract work ends, weeks after announcing a Reston Town Center lease.

RESTON, VA — Reston-based government technology contractor TekSynap expects to eliminate as many as 69 positions after work under two subcontracting programs comes to an end, according to a notice filed with the Virginia Works Rapid Response Program.

The anticipated permanent separations will occur in three phases, beginning with 36 employees on Oct. 14. Another 22 employees are expected to be separated Nov. 30, followed by 11 employees on Dec. 31, according to the Aug. 14 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice.

Although TekSynap listed its headquarters at 1900 Oracle Way in Reston as the employment site, the affected employees primarily work remotely from locations across the United States. The company designated the Reston office as the applicable site because the employees are assigned to, report to or receive direction from its Virginia-based operations.

Wireless And Management Positions Affected

TekSynap attributed the workforce reduction to the approaching end of work under what it called its Wireless contract. The company said it was working as a subcontractor on two programs and would need fewer employees once that work concludes.

The first round of anticipated layoffs includes 13 wireless engineers, five configuration analysts, four project managers and four site managers. Wireless engineer leads, network engineers, a deployment manager, a quality analyst and a senior core network engineer are also among the positions affected Oct. 14.

The Nov. 30 reductions are expected to include six site managers, three wireless engineers, two network engineers and two wireless engineer leads. Other affected positions include an infrastructure lead, network architect, network engineering manager, principal network engineer and project coordinator.

The final round on Dec. 31 is expected to affect 11 workers in positions that include program and project management, network engineering, deployment management, quality assurance and wireless technical work.

Affected employees do not have bumping or displacement rights and are not represented by a union or other collective bargaining organization, according to the notice.

Company Exploring Other Assignments

TekSynap said it is evaluating other assignments and employment opportunities for the affected workers. Before each scheduled separation, the company plans to determine whether an employee’s experience and qualifications match other available positions.

Employees offered suitable alternative work may remain with the company, potentially reducing the number of layoffs. TekSynap said it could not guarantee that other assignments would be available to every affected employee.

Those who lose their jobs will remain eligible for rehire, subject to the company’s regular hiring requirements and the availability of suitable positions.

Layoff Notice Follows Headquarters Lease

The WARN notice came less than two weeks after TekSynap announced plans to relocate its headquarters to a larger office at Reston Town Center.

TekSynap signed a long-term lease for approximately 26,500 square feet covering the second floor of 11921 Freedom Drive, according to an Aug. 3 announcement from property owner and developer BXP. The company plans to move from the 1900 Oracle Way address listed in its layoff notice.

Founded in 2008, TekSynap provides cloud integration, cybersecurity, software development and information technology modernization services to federal civilian, defense and intelligence agencies. At the time of the lease announcement, the company said it had approximately 1,800 employees and subcontracted personnel.

TekSynap said the new Reston Town Center office would serve as its core services hub and support employees working at government customer locations. A timeline for the headquarters move was not included in the lease announcement.
