Reston Lakes Clear Of Algae Bloom, Reopen For Recreational Use: RA
Reston Association's watershed staff and its environmental contractor cleared Lake Audubon and Lake Anne for recreational use.

RESTON, VA — Reston Association gave the "all clear" on Thursday regarding the algae boom that recently appeared in Lake Audubon and Lake Anne.
RA's watershed staff and its environmental contractor, AEC, began to monitor the lakes when Dolichospermum, a potentially harmful cyanobacteria was discovered last week. After an inspection on Wednesday, they each determined that both lakes were clear for recreational use.
"The bloom began after hot weather allowed cyanobacteria to thrive, which was then enhanced further by an influx of nutrients that came from a water main break that flowed into Snakeden Branch last week," said Peter Lusk, RA's chief operating officer on Thursday.

RA alerted the community last week to stay out of the lakes until the "all clear" was given to limit residents and their pets' exposure to the cyanobacteria.
While residents may now safely use Lake Audubon and Lake Anne for recreational use, swimming remains prohibited in all of the bodies of water RA manages.
