Reston Mother Pens Book To Help Children Battling Critical Illnesses

Esther Fausett of Reston began writing poetry to give her son a relatable story to help him cope with his cancer treatment.

RESTON, VA — Esther Fausett's son, Solomon, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, stage 3 — a cancer of the adrenal glands — a week after his second birthday.

From the ages of 2 to 4, Solomon battled severe neuropathy, which involved him having to relearn how to walk.

When Fausett, a mother of two living in Reston, was told that Solomon had just 48 hours to live, she began to write poems for him.

"I couldn't find enough picture books that related to the journey he was navigating," Fausett said, in a release. "Solomon has recently turned 7 years old. He is thriving and remains in remission."

With the encouragement of her husband, Fausett continued writing poetry, which led her to look for a publisher.

In November, Histria Books published her book "Little Warriors, Big Lives." The poetry picture book seeks to empower and comfort children battling critical illnesses. Caregivers, friends, and family members can read poems that are positive, upbeat, and heartwarming that children can relate to their own lives.

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of "Little Warriors, Big Lives" will be donated to Band of Parents to support children’s cancer research. In addition, for every 100 books sold, Histria Books will donate a copy to hospitals around the U.S.
