Reston Raiders Retire Evan Soggin's Number
Young player died in horseback riding accident in July.
The Reston Raiders hockey club retired Evan Soggin's jersey on Saturday night.
Many family members, friends and teammates gathered in the mezzanine at SkateQuest for a ceremony. Teammates and coaches took turns recalling their favorite memories of the 12-year-old hockey player,
The Reston Raiders said Evan’s family was at the event and accepted a framed Raiders jersey, which was signed by dozens of Evan’s teammates.
Evan’s No. 87 jersey will be retired to the foyer of the rink and this number will not be used by any player in the future. All travel players will wear a No. 87 patch on their helmets this year in remembrance of Evan.
Donations to the Evan Soggin Memorial Scholarship Fund were generated a public skating session, from the Bantam Blue team selling “spirit wear” and SkateQuest donated 10 percent of all proceeds from the pro shop and snack bar on Saturday.

The scholarship fund has now reached the $20,000 mark, the Raiders report.
