Reston's Cathy Hudgins Community Center Marks 20th Anniversary
The Cathy Hudgins Community Center in Reston will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a community event on Aug. 15.

RESTON, VA — The Cathy Hudgins Community Center at Southgate in Reston will celebrate its 20th anniversary this July. The center, which first opened on July 10, 2006, serves as an intergenerational hub for the community.
Approximately 20,000 people visit the center each year. It provides after-school programs, summer camps, senior health and wellness initiatives, English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, and various recreational and cultural events. These programs are provided by the Department of Neighborhood and Community Services.
The anniversary also honors the legacy of former Hunter Mill District Supervisor Cathy Hudgins, who died last May. Hudgins spearheaded the effort to establish the center. She negotiated the land lease, secured funding, reviewed the building’s design, and developed its programming vision.

Hudgins' leadership transformed a privately owned community room and swimming pool, which had been vacant for nine years, into a public gathering place for education, engagement, and recreation. The center was officially renamed in her honor in 2021. This recognition allowed Hudgins to participate in the ceremony and see the impact of her work in Reston.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary, the center will host a community celebration on Aug. 15, according to a board matter introduced by Supervisor Walter Alcorn (D-Hunter Mill), during Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting.
