Coronavirus Deaths, Hospitalizations Inch Up In Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health confirmed cases of the new coronavirus and deaths had increased as of Sunday morning.

VIRGINIA — On Sunday, the Virginia Department of Health reported 996 additional cases of the COVID-19, the virus associated with the coronavirus and 12 more deaths. There are 44,607 cumulative cases, 1,375 deaths and 4,643 hospitalizations in the commonwealth, all increases over the past 24 hours.

After a mid-week increase in Virginia's number of currently hospitalized patients, numbers of pending or confirmed COVID-19 patients using ventilators or intensive care beds has remained steady. There are 371 pending or confirmed COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in the intensive care unit, down one case from Saturday. The 196 COVID-19 patients using ventilators increased by two since Saturday. A total of 623 ventilators of 2,984 available at hospitals are in use, representing 21-percent use in Virginia. No hospitals are experiencing difficulty obtaining or restocking protective gear or other medical supplies in the next 72 hours.

Northern Virginia, which has most of the state's cases, is reopening at a slower pace than the rest of the state.

Gov. Ralph Northam allowed race tracks and public beaches to reopen on a limited basis starting May 29. Horse tracks, NASCAR, and other vehicle racing will be allowed to hold single-day events that are closed to the public and without spectators.

Public beaches can open for recreational activity in addition to fishing and exercise. There will be strict physical distancing and other restrictions in place, including:

  • No gatherings of more than 10 people
  • No tents
  • No alcohol
  • No group sports

Northam has also ordered Virginians age 10 and older to wear a face mask or covering inside retail shops, places of worship, libraries, bars and restaurants, on public transit, at government offices, and workplaces where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

The order suggests kids age 2 and older also wear face coverings.

  • Alexandria: 1,974 cases, 190 hospitalizations, 44 deaths; increase of 14 cases and three hospitalization.
  • Arlington County: 2,116 cases, 372 hospitalizations, 115 deaths; decrease of 1 case, one more hospitalization and two deaths
  • Fairfax County: 11,110 cases, 1,311 hospitalizations, 383 deaths; increase of 204 cases, 11 hospitalizations
  • Fairfax City: 65 cases, eight hospitalizations, six deaths; no changes in any category.
  • Falls Church: 55 cases, 11 hospitalizations, eight deaths; no change.
  • Loudoun County: 2,575 cases, 163 hospitalizations, 62 deaths; increase of 146 cases and one hospitalization.
  • Manassas: 1,092 cases, 64 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 46 cases; increase of one hospitalization.
  • Manassas Park: 305 cases, 29 hospitalizations, six deaths; increase of six cases.
  • Prince William County: 5,533 cases, 463 hospitalizations, 104 deaths; increase of 121 cases, 3 hospitalizations.
  • Fredericksburg: 15 cases, 21 hospitalizations, no deaths; increase of 8 cases, decrease of 19 hospitalizations.
  • Spotsylvania County: 556 cases, 40 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of 32 cases, decrease of 32 hospitalizations.
  • Stafford County: 713 cases, 74 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of 9 cases and two hospitalizations.
