Serving For Heroes Charity Tennis Tournament in Reston, VA

Serving For Heroes Charity Open is a 300pt - USTA-sanctioned tennis tournament at Lake Newport. Proceeds will go to Our Military Kids, Inc

Reston, VA – Wilson Paine, a local long-time tennis player and fan, organizes the charity tennis tournament 3rd Annual Serving for Heroes Charity Open Presented by HURD I/T Communications to raise funds for Our Military Kids, Inc. – a local nonprofit that provides grants in sports, fine arts, and tutoring to military children in the DC metro area and nationwide.

“I am very happy to once again bring an event like this to our local community. The tournament has experienced enormous growth over the past two years and the outpouring of support from the tennis community, HURD I/T Communications, the Reston Association, and all our partners has been amazing,” said Wilson Paine, the tournament director and organizer.

Through this tournament, Paine hopes to shed light on the great work being done by Our Military Kids, Inc., as well as unite the tennis community around such a wonderful cause. Both the Citi Open and the Washington Kastles are sponsors for the event.

“Initially, the Serving For Heroes Charity Open raised funds to assist in the recovery process for wounded veterans. This year I wanted to broaden that scope to focus more on the military families who also endure incredible emotional and physical hardships that tend to be overlooked,” Paine said. “That is what attracted me to Our Military Kids. They understand that supporting military families and more specifically military children is an extension of supporting our veterans. Their grants offer an outlet to ease the emotional toll placed on military children while their parent is deployed. It’s such a worthy cause and felt like a natural fit for this tournament’s mission.”

Paine first thought of creating a charity tennis tournament back in 2011 and organized the inaugural tournament at Georgetown University in 2013. The tournament had over 100 player entries and won the 2013 USTA Mid-Atlantic Military Tennis Award.

About Our Military Kids, Inc.

Based in McLean, Our Military Kids, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to provide support and recognition to military children. This may include children ages 3 years through the 12thgrade of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members, along with children of Wounded and Fallen Warriors from all branches of service. The grants to children pay for fees associated with athletic, fine arts, and tutoring programs. Our Military Kids’ grants keep military children engaged in activities of their choosing, helping to relieve the stress of separation from a parent by providing a positive distraction, minimizing emotional destabilization, building self-esteem, and enabling academic achievement. A service member once said, “Please don’t send cookies, care packages, or socks. Just take care of our children.” Our Military Kids works every day to fulfill this plea.
