Silver Line Extension Could Finish In Less Than A Year (ICYMI)

New Metro stations in Reston, Herndon, and at Dulles Airport reportedly could finish construction in fall 2019.

The Silver Line extension is getting closer and closer to completion, and new Metro stations in Reston, Herndon, and beyond could finish construction as soon as next fall, according to a report.

WTOP reports that the Silver Line extension could wrap up "as soon as fall 2019 or winter 2020," which would allow Metro to start testing, commissioning, and training before taking ownership of the tracks. Opening probably wouldn't happen until summer 2020, however.

It's been more than four years since the first part of the Silver Line opened, meaning if everything stays on schedule, there will be a six-year gap between when the Wiehle-Reston East station opened and when the new stations become available to commuters. Construction on the second phase -- which expands to Reston Town Center, Herndon, Dulles International Airport, and Loudoun County -- began all the way back in 2013.
