Smart Markets Reston Farmers Markets Opens Wednesday

This was certainly a winter of much discontent but we learn from the farmers that a new spring always follows winter, no matter how bad the winter may have been.  And spring is always good for the farmers and for the farmers' markets.  This was a busy winter for the food industry and food activists too; we have a new farm bill and some new scientific studies that have both good news and bad news for our individual health and for the health of our environment.  Over the next few months, I will try to explain what they mean for those of you who want to eat healthier food grown in a manner that leaves behind a healthier earth.  Several great books about food passed through my hands and into my head and heart and I will be telling you more about them too.

In the meantime, our markets are reopening all over Fairfax and Prince William counties - we have three new ones this year - and our first reopening will be our Reston Market at Reston Corner this Wednesday, April 23rd. We will continue to operate from 3:00 - 7:00pm every Wednesday through November 26th.   We will take you all the way from the first leaf lettuces of spring through to your Thanksgiving turkey.  In between we will have one of the largest markets in Fairfax County with a wide variety of farmers including several who are practicing

sustainable farming to minimize toxins and maximize flavor and nutrient content.
I will be catching you up on the farm and food news of the winter and working hard to keep you abreast of all the news that's ft to put on your table throughout the season.  In the meantime, please visit our website: Smartmarkets.org or friend us on Facebook. for more information about our markets and our vendors.  See you at the market!
