The South Lakes High School's Ice Hockey Club took home its first varsity win on
Friday, defeating Bishop O'Connell 8-6 at O'Connell's home rink.
Points were registered by nine different Seahawks, including multiple points by captain Nick Beaulac, junior Corey Baumgartner, and sophomore Logan Nasr. Points are registered when a goal is scored, or an assist is awarded by the referees. This is South Lakes' first season of varsity competition.
The game was relatively even in the first period. O'Connell's Joseph McDonald started the scoring on an unassisted goal. He would total four points during the game, including a hat trick.
South Lakes (1-1) took the lead by scoring two goals in two and a half minutes with goals by Dan Stromecki and Noah Rubin, but O'Connell was able to tie on a score by Anthony Olivette from McDonald.

South Lakes was on the power play when the O'Connell team carried over a
penalty for tripping into the second, and Baumgartner scored on a nice pass from Beaulac. With the score 3-2 at that point, Beaulac and Baumgartner went on to add another goal at 11:12 in the second.
It would be another seven minutes before the next goal, when McDonald scored again at 4:28 to re-tie the game. Not to be outdone though, Baumgartner and
Beaulac formed another great combo and scored at 4:11 to bring the score
to 5-4. South Lakes' Nasr scored on assists from Reed Kordella and Stephen Galanti to bring the score to 6-4 at the end of the second.
Although McDonald scored again with 11:14 remaining in the third, South Lakes' offense scored two goals at 10:16 and 8:33.
South Lakes next plays Bishop Ireton in an inter-divisional match up on Friday at the Ashburn Ice House at 9:40 p.m.
