Gofundme created for South Lakes High School Graduate Arturo Roman who was affected by Trump's administration's decision to end DACA
Arturo Roman is one of my best friends who has helped me out some much through high school, and now he needs our help. When Arturo was two, he was brought by his mother and father here to the United States to seek a better future. It took him a while to realize that no matter how hard he worked, not being a citizen would always have a huge impact on him. However, thanks to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), him and nearly 800,000 other people like him were given the opprotunity to work and study here in the United States. Now 17 years later, his future is in jeopardy as President Trump's administration has decided to end DACA, leaving Arturo roughly two years before his permits expire. Without these, he will not be able to work, drive legally, or pay in-state tuition and risks having to return to Mexico, a country he hasn't been to since he was a toddler. Throughout high school, Arturo was heavily involved in the JROTC program, which is where I met him. He always cared about the well being of others and working for the greater good. During his 4 years, he organized blood drives, banquets, and other community events. He always put others before himself, which was most evident when he made a major push during senior year to raise over $3,000 for cancer research. He left a positive mark on everyone that knew him, showed a dedication and committment to helping people like no other, and still managed to graduate with over a 4.0 and get into Virginia Tech. Arturo has a road full of uncertainty ahead of him and truly does not know what the future holds for him. If forced to pay out-of-state tuition, he will most likely not be able to afford it and will be put in a situation where he might have to return to working construction. Arturo was a young man with a vision who was suddenly stopped in his tracks by a huge, unavoidable obstacle. With your help, we can help him get back on the path to the future he deserves.
