RESTON, VA — Hunter Mill District Supervisor Walter Alcorn is hosting a town hall meeting on Monday to begin the planning process to determine what should be done with the central green that's included as part of the Reston Town Center North project.

The town hall meeting will be a chance to learn the latest developments in the RTCN project and ideas on how what should be done with the 3.5 acre central green.

On April 13, 2022, Alcorn first announced the formation of a task force to focus on future development in the Reston Town Center North area, with former Fairfax County Board Chair Kate Hanley acting as the group's chairwoman.

Starting on Jan. 30, 2023, the task force met regularly to review possible uses for the various segments of the RTCN development. These included a new community center and home for the Reston Regional Library, as well as a refurbished Embry Rucker homeless shelter.

On Oct. 26, 2023, the nine-member task force released its final recommendations for the RTCN development, which the board of supervisors later approved.

"The immediate priority for RTCN is a new Embry Rucker homeless shelter (with some permanent supportive housing units) and a new regional library," Alcorn said, in an email. "These facilities are on track for completion by 2029. My hope is that the central green will also be completed by then, at least the first phase, but since we do not yet know what will go into the central green, I hesitate to put a deadline on that."

The RTCN area broadly encompasses the land to the north of New Dominion Parkway and Bowman Towne Drive, to the east of Town Center Parkway, to the west of Fountain Drive, and to the south of Baron Cameron Run. The various blocks of land are owned by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, Inova Health Care and the Fairfax County Park Authority.

Language in the Reston Comprehensive Plan that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors adopted at its Sept. 13, 2023 meeting described the central green as a "substantial public open space" where people could gather or maybe enjoy a performance.

Monday's meeting will convene at 7 p.m., in the community room of the North County Governmental Center located at 1801 Cameron Glen Drive in Reston.
