Veterans Day 2020: Ceremonies, What's Open, Closed In Reston

With Veterans Day falling on a Wednesday this year, here's what you can expect as far as openings and closings in our area.

RESTON, VA — Veterans Day is a unique holiday for a couple of reasons: 1) it's always on the same date and is therefore on a different day of the week every year, and 2) it's a borderline holiday in that some people get the day off and others don't.

Veterans Day, originally called Armistice Day, is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed each Nov. 11 to honor veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. It differs from Memorial Day in that Veterans Day honors all who have served, while Memorial Day specifically honors those who died in military service.

Below are the schedule changes to know for the Veterans Day holiday around Reston:

  • Reston Association Offices will be closed in observance of Veterans Day.
  • Fairfax County offices: Closed on Wednesday.
  • Courts: Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed on Nov. 11.
  • Fairfax County Public Schools: Two-hour early release.
  • The Fairfax County Animal Shelter remains open by appointment only.
  • Community centers: Fairfax County Neighborhood and Community Services (NCS) community centers will be closed on Wednesday.
  • Fairfax Connector: Fairfax Connector bus service is offering holiday weekday service. Go to www.fairfaxcounty.gov/connector for more information.
  • Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library locations are closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
  • Metrorail: Metrorail operates from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Veterans Day.
  • Metrobus: Metrobus runs on a Saturday schedule on Veterans Day. See bus schedules here.
  • Parks: The Fairfax County Parks are closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11, but Frying Pan Farm Park will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and its indoor arena will also be open the same hours.
  • Post offices: U.S. Postal Service offices are closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
  • Recreation centers: On Wednesday, Nov. 11, Fairfax County recreation centers are open for regular hours and will offer free admission to veterans.
  • Trash and recycling: Residents should contact their trash and recycling collector directly for service schedule changes due to the holiday.
  • Virginia Railway Express: VRE does not provide service on Labor Day.
