Veterans Day 2022: Events, What's Open, Closed Around Reston
Veterans Day will bring free admission perks for service members as well as schedule changes for local services.
RESTON, VA — On Veterans Day, we honor all of those who have served in the U.S. armed forces. The federal holiday on Friday, Nov. 11 will come with special events honoring veterans and schedule changes for local services.
At George Washington's Mount Vernon, free admission will be offered on Nov. 11 to active duty, former, or retired military personnel. Throughout the open hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., veterans can put a floral tribute at Washington's Tomb. Other activities will include the Harmony Heritage Singers performing at 11 a.m. in the Smith Auditorium, General Washington greeting guests at the Interpretive Center at 11 a.m., a Sons of the American Revolution & Daughters of the American Revolution ceremony at the Tomb at 1 p.m., General Washington and Colonel Lear salute to service in the Smith Auditorium at 1:30 p.m., and US Air Force Strings Orchestra concert in the Smith Auditorium at 2 p.m.
The Fairfax County Park Authority will recognize Veterans Day with free admission at its nine recreation centers for veterans, active duty military and their families on Nov. 11. The admission includes entrance to the locations' pools, fitness rooms, gyms and racquetball courts.

American Legion Post 184 is sponsoring a Veterans Day Observance at 11 a.m., on Nov. 11, at the Town Green, which Located is behind the new Municipal Building at 777 Lynn St. in Historic Downtown Herndon. For more information, call 703-481-1200.

Head to the City of Alexandria for its annual Veterans Day ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, 2701 Commonwealth Avenue, Alexandria, VA. It will include patriotic music, singing of the Star Spangled Banner and God Bless America, Pledge of Allegiance, recognition of Gold Star families and veterans, reading of Alexandria's 68 Vietnam War fallen service members and tribute to Alexandria's own POW/MIA and Medal of Honor recipient Captain "Rocky" Versace. In addition, qualified Vietnam era service members will receive a Vietnam Era Veteran Lapel Pin as part of the Department of Defense's Vietnam War 50 year commemoration.
Fairfax County government will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Nov. 11. Below are other schedule changes to know around Reston.
Fairfax County Public Schools: Nov. 11 is a student holiday.
Community centers: Fairfax County's Neighborhood and Community Services facilities will be closed on Nov. 11. Fastran will not operate on Nov. 11.
Courts: The Fairfax County Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Nov. 11.
Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles: All Virginia DMV customer service centers will be closed on Nov. 11.
Fairfax Connector: Buses will run on holiday weekday service on Nov. 11. That means all regular weekday routes operate, except Routes 231, 232, 335, 351, 393, 394, 395, 396, 432, 461, 494, 495, 556, 585, 599, 624, 634, 697, 698, 699, 715, 722, 724 834, 835 and 985.
George Washington's Mount Vernon: Open daily, including on Veterans Day. Veterans and active duty military will get free admission.
Libraries: All Fairfax County Public Library locations are closed on Nov. 11.
Metro: Metrorail will operate on a Saturday holiday schedule from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m. Metrobus will run on a Saturday supplemental schedule. For more information, visit www.wmata.com/service.
Park authority: Riverbend Park Visitor Center is closed on Nov. 11. At Frying Pan Farm Park, the farm and the indoor arena are open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., on Nov. 11, but the visitor center is closed.
Post offices: Closed on Nov. 11.
Recreation centers: Open regular hours to 9 p.m. on Nov. 11. Veterans, active duty military and their families get free admission with military identification.
Trash and recycling collection: Fairfax County collection customers will have collection services on Nov. 11. Private collection customers should check with their hauler for any changes.
