Virginia's Most Googled Netflix Show Is ...

The most Googled Netflix show in Virginia is a drama looking at the life of an infamous drug lord.

Unless you live under a rock, you probably know Netflix is booming as Virginia TV viewers ditch expensive cable packages for streaming and subscription services. Last year alone, the online video service said members worldwide watched more than 140 million hours a day. That equates to more than 1 billion hours a week.

But have you ever wondered what the most popular show is in Virginia? Well, the good folks over at HighSpeedInternet.com set out to answer that very question, and you might wonder what it says about the state.

And their findings may surprise you.

The company used data from Google Trends to find out what Netflix show people searched for most last year in each state. In Virginia it seems people really, really wanted to watch "Narcos," which is a departure from most of the country. The series is a look at the criminal exploits of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, as well as other drug kingpins over the years.

The hit show "Orange is the New Black" was tops in 15 states, including New York, New Jersey, Florida and Georgia. It was a particularly popular search in one region, and the authors make an interesting point as to why that might be the case.

“As you can see, this show is super popular in the South, but another interesting correlation might be why these states are attracted to the show: Seven of these states land among the top 15 in incarceration rate per capita, which could explain why they’re drawn to a show set in prison,” the authors wrote.

In 2017, “American Vandal” was a distant second, being the most popular show in five states, including Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota.

The results somewhat lined up with what Netflix told us in December. The company said “American Vandal” was the most devoured show last year, meaning viewers spent more than two hours a day watching the show.

“Orange is the New Black” was the fourth-highest show that viewers watched ahead of their significant others, the company said.

Perhaps most surprisingly, 14 states were unique last year in what show they searched for most. Among these shows were "Narcos," "The Keepers," “Big Mouth,” “Black Mirror,” “Ozark,” “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and “Dear White People.”

Just 10 shared their favorite show with just one other state.

Also of note, it seems many of the 55 million Netflix subscribers in America are trying to watch “Star Trek: Discovery.” The show, which isn’t available in the U.S., was the most searched for show in three states: Alaska, Colorado and Oregon.
